Antibes
A resort with a fort & a dash of Picasso
The scenic old port town of Antibes, located between Nice and Cannes on the French Riviera, is very popular with visitors and artists alike who all love the quality of the light and the lively atmosphere.
The old town is enclosed by ramparts around the site the Greco/Roman settlement of Antipolis. The 12th Century Château Grimaldi, in which the Grimaldi family lived till the 17th Century, is nowadays a museum featuring the work of Picasso and can be identified by its square medieval tower.
On the north side of the marina is Vauban's star-shaped Fort Carré overlooking the luxury yachts. Here the young Napoleon Bonaparte was imprisoned for a short time after the fall of Robespierre in 1794.
The Cap d'Antibes itself is well worth exploring and if you've time there is an amazing walk around the Sentier du Litoral. If you're a fan of Jazz and nightclubs don't miss fabulous Juan-les-Pins on the other side of the peninsula.
