Colonial Art

The Spanish influence

Colonial Paintings in the Church of Sangarará

Most colonial art in Peru is related to the Catholic Church, especially concerning paintings. Before colonization, most art was woven textiles, ceramics or architectural.

In Lima, the best museum for colonial art is the Museo Pedro de Osma. In Cusco, check out the Museum and Convent of San Francisco, which has colonial paintings as well as architecture.

The famous Cusco School (Escuela Cusqueña) was a Roman Catholic artistic tradition, based in Cusco. Many are preserved in museums in Cusco and also in museums of Brazil, United States and England. Below is the famous Our Lady of the Rosary, painted by the Cusco School.
