Yumbilla Falls
Heart in love
The name Yumbilla translates to “heart in love.” Some claim this as the fourth and some as the fifth highest waterfall in the world. Either way, it’s beautiful and will leave you in love with the Peruvian Amazon. It’s a beautiful hike through the cloud forest, with great birdwatching along the way. Watch for the Marvelous Spatuletail hummingbird and the Gallito de las Rocas.
There are no services at the waterfall, so be prepared to pack out anything that you pack in.
Transport
From Chachapoyas, drive an hour and 15 minutes north to Pedro Ruiz Gallo, then another half an hour to the trailhead. It’s a two and a half hour hike up to the falls themselves. Guides are required for the national forest, so do your research to find an experienced local guide. Many agencies in Chachapoyas offer day tours to the waterfalls.
