Plaza de Armas de Lima
Since Incan times
For all its colonial splendor, the Plaza de Armas de Lima was a central square long before Francisco Pizarro arrived. The area was used by the original inhabitants as far back as 200 BCE.
Today it is a popular place for locals and tourists alike. It is surrounded by the Government Palace (where the president lives), the Municipal Palace, the Archbishop’s Palace and the Cathedral of Lima. There are also many restaurants and shops around the square.
Protests
Protests are often organized for the Plaza de Armas. Always check local media and ask at your hotel before going to the area.
