Wheelchair Travel

Lake Sandoval Wheelchair Accessible

Peru is not an easy place to travel if you use a wheelchair or have other mobility limitations. Travelers with mobility challenges face all kinds of injustices, from airplane bathrooms to most busses. However, traveling around Peru is possible and definitely worth it.

One tour company to check out is Wheel the World. Even if you don’t book with them, they’re a great resource because they have led trips to Machu Picchu and on the Inca trail. If you’ll be in Cusco, check out my wheelchair accessible routes for visiting the city.

Machu Picchu now has a new accessible route through part of the ruins. International adults with disabilities also get 50% off the ticket price. Peruvian adults with disabilities can visit for free.

Unless you have a travel agency that can accommodate your needs, I recommend renting a car to travel around Peru. The most common way to travel between towns are busses and I have yet to find a wheelchair accessible bus in Peru. There are collective taxis that go between most major towns, which would be the best option if you don’t want to rent a car.

New to travel with a wheelchair? Check out Wheelchair Travel and Carrie-Anne Lightly’s travel blog for ideas.

Finally, if you’re traveling solo in a wheelchair, please contact me. I’d love to work with you to make Peru accessible for you.
