Los Amigos Research Station

Best non-profit that benefits science

White-throated Toucan by cabins at Los Amigos

Los Amigos is run by the non-profit Conservación Amazónica that manages a total of three research stations that welcome both scientific researchers and travelers who want to see the wildlife that live on protected land. I saw more species of birds just sitting by my cabin at Los Amigos than I did at all of the other places I visited put together, like the toucan above.

The cabins where guests stay are very nice, especially compared to many other eco-lodges in the area. Meals are basic and are shared at long tables with the scientists who are conducting research while you’re there.

Baby Capuchin Monkey

Most evenings one of the researchers will present their work in the library building. Presentations are interactive and open to all guests, staff and other resident scientists. It is fascinating to learn about the flora and fauna of the rainforest directly from the people who are conducting the studies.

This is not close to Puerto Maldonado. I went by myself, though most people would go with a guide from Puerto Maldonado. It takes an hour to get to the town where you get on a boat and then about two more hours on the boat upriver to the lodge. Going back is faster because you’re headed downstream.
