Huanchaco

Famous surfing & history

Huanchaco continues a fishing & surfing tradition with the caballito de totora that dates back at least 3,500 years.

The beaches at Huanchaco have great waves for surfing year-round, making this a world famous surfing destination. The beach right in town has small waves perfect for learning while beaches north and south of the center have bigger waves for expert surfers. Read my blog about surfing in Huanchaco.

There are several great restaurants in town. El Caribe is the most famous though Warique El Buzo is the only one that buys the catch of the day from locals who fish with the caballito de totora.
