Huacarpay Wetlands

Best wetland birding near Cusco

Puna Teal at Huacarpay wetlands

The Huacarpay wetlands are a Ramsar site, meaning that they’re globally recognized as an important wetland habitat. It’s best to visit during migration times, around March and October. If you’re in Peru for the international birding Big Day, Huacarpay is an excellent place to get a long list of birds.

Huacarpay during the rainy season

Most birding can be done from the road that leads from the Huacarpay sign towards the village of Lucre.

During the rainy season, December to March, the area is green and the water might come up to the road.

During the dry season, May to October, you may be able to walk out into the marshes as paths appear.

There are a couple bird blinds (above) and a few towers that are great for seeing farther across the marshes.

Transport

To get there on public transport, take the Pachatusan colectivo from anywhere along Avenida Cultura. It’s a green and white bus and will charge s/2.50 or s/3 soles depending on how far you take it.
