Pikimachay Cave & Huanta Tour

Full day tour with history and nature

Pikimachay Cave

This is the perfect tour for anybody who wants a full day of history and nature, without driving too far from Ayacucho. Many tour agencies in Ayacucho offer this tour and it’s easy to book with any of the agencies on or near the main square.

Pikimachay Cave

The tour starts just 40 minutes north of Ayachucho at the Pikimachay Cave, where the oldest evidence of human habitation in Peru was found. Late American archeologist Richard MacNeish found evidence of people and tools dating back to 20,000 BCE.

Waterfalls & hiking

Next you’ll go see some waterfalls and short, optional hiking trails. The area around Ayacucho has a similar ecosystem to Machu Picchu, so you may see similar wildlife, like the torrent duck, below.

Huanta

Most tours stop for lunch in Huanta and then visit the town’s main square and a few historic monuments to important moments in modern Peruvian history.
