Abbaye le Thoronet
The 3 Sisters of Provence (2) Le Thoronet Abbay
Located between Draguignan and Brignolles, the Cistercian Abbey of Le Thoronet is one of the Three Sisters of Provence. Incidentally, the other two sisters, Sénanque and Silvacane, are in the Luberon.
Inspiring Le Corbusier
Built around the turn of the 13th century it is arguably one of the best examples of Cistercian architecture. This is due to its purity of line, harmony of the buildings and its austere yet beautiful appearance. Such is the significance of its design that it has inspired the work of the world renowned architects Le Corbusier at La Tourette and John Pawson at Novy Dvur in the Czech Republic.
No longer in use for religious purposes, it is well worth visiting. Moreover, the beautiful Cloister and Chapter Room should not be missed.
