L’Isle-sur-la-Sorge
Antiques, antiques & yet more antiques!
Famous for its many antique shops and its renowned Sunday antique markets, the small town of L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue not far from Avignon derives its name from being in effect an island surrounded by the River Sorgue.
Known originally simply as Insula, L’Isle-sur-La-Sorgue goes back to the 12th Century, although the current name dates from 1890. The river formed a moat for the ramparts until the authorities removed them during the late 18th Century. Always a busy place, it boasted two annual fairs and mills which produced oil and flour.
A haven for antique hunters
Today the waterside cafés and restaurants, (Keith Floyd the British TV Chef owned one), cater for the tourists who arrive in droves looking for that elusive bargain in the proliferation of antique shops.
