Transport
France is blessed with an excellent transport infrastructure and getting to the various destinations in Provence couldn’t be easier!
Driving
Provence has an extensive system of roads including Autoroutes, (Freeways/Motorways) with the prefix 'A xx', stretching from west to east (Avignon/Nîmes to Nice) and south to north (Marseille to Gap) as well as excellent National roads (prefix 'N xx' or 'RN xx) and narrower Departmental roads (prefix 'D xxx').
Nowadays of course ‘smart’ technology can show you the way if you prefer! However, if you are still using Michelin maps (which I've used for many years and recommend) these are conveniently colour coded: Autoroutes are yellow bordered by thin red lines, National roads are red and Departmental Roads are yellow.
Driving in Cities:
Generally in cities such as Cannes, Marseille and Nice it is best to forget about using a car and just use the local transport. Links to each are given below in Practical Info.
