Place St. François

A Fish Market & a Turkish cannon ball!

On the edge of Vieux Nice, just off the Boulevard Jean Jaurès, lies the Place St-François. Here the modern day fish market can be found. This market takes place every morning (6am–1pm), except Monday, but be there early to beat the Niçois to the best fish!

The former Franciscan convent stood here originally – look carefully and you can still see traces of it. A small section of the cloister and the restored bell tower, the Tour de l’Horlage, still dominate the square. The Baroque 16th Century former town hall is now home to the Trades Council. The Baroque church of St-François-de-Paule, relocated during the 18th Century, now stands on rue St-François, which leads to the Cours Saleya not far from the Jardin Albert 1.

Don’t miss the Turkish cannon ball from the siege of Nice by the Turks in 1543 set into the wall of a house on the corner of rue Droite and rue de la Loge.
