Alpha Loup
The Time of the Wolf
The wolf, a much maligned, misunderstood and legendary predator, once roamed wild throughout much of Europe. Now quite rare in the wild although populations exist in Italy and the Mercantour region of south east France. Visitors can see some at the Alpha-Loup Centre at le Boréon near St-Martin-Vésubie.
Visitors from Italy
Wolves returned to France in 1992 probably from Italy where they have not been persecuted to the same extent as elsewhere due possibly to their link with Romulus and Remus, the legendary founders of Rome. It is thought that there are about 20 wolves in the Mercantour National Park.
Unwelcome creatures
In France their return remains unwelcome by some folks, especially those in the rural community. The Alpha Loup Centre helps to promote a better understanding of their place in the ecology of the mountains.
The Alpha Wolf Park lies about 8km/5m up the road from St-Martin-Vésubie at le Boréon. Moreover, don’t miss an exciting, original and educational day out – ideal for all the family.
