Le Suquet
Cannes Old Town
There's more to Cannes than a glitzy lifestyle, trendy boutiques and yachts! There is the historic old town of Le Suquet too which is the original Canoïs (see Cannes page)
Le Suquet is perched on the slopes of Mont Chevalier and overlooks Cannes, Île Ste Marguerite and the nearby Esterel.
It was constructed by the monks from the Îles de Lerins to protect the fishing community of Canoïs from attacks by Saracen raiders. The castle which they built in 1088 still exists - this together with the later church tower of Nôtre-Dame-d'Espérance forms a memorable skyline (see images above).
Le Suquet provides a more relaxed experience for the visitor who, after experiencing the bustle of Cannes itself, is prepared to climb up from the end of rue Meynadier and wander along the cobbled rue St Antoine in order to enjoy the many charming cafés and restaurants.
