Ardvreck Castle & Calda House

Evocative ruins

The scenery of Ardvreck Castle

Though not huge attractions in their own right both Ardvreck Castle and Calda House are well-worth a stop for a leg-stretch if you’re passing by.

Both are ruins on the shores of Loch Assynt and are reached by short footpaths from the same car park on the A837.

As good info boards here explain, Ardvreck Castle can trace it’s history to about the late-15th-century, while Calda House was built later as one of the grandest early-18th-century Highland houses.

It’s a wildly romantic spot, and the ruined nature of the two buildings help provide a certain atmosphere, as well as being fun to poke around as you try to imagine what was where.

There’s also a small beach to stroll along here.
