Summer Isles & Cogaich

Magical islands & rugged mountains

Summer Isles sunset

You can’t go out to sea from Ullapool, without passing the scattering of offshore islands known as the Summer Isles.

These pretty little islands, with their relatively tranquil surrounding waters, perfect for a spot of sea-kayaking, the hub for which is the small and laid-back village of Achiltibuie.

It’s one of a number of tiny settlements on the vast and rugged Coigach penninsula where scenic drives and exceptional walks (see walkhighlands.co.uk/assynt.shtml) tempt slow travellers away from the NC500.

But even if you don’t have time to linger, try to fit in a 2hr15min boat tour (Mon–Sat 10am & 1.30pm; adults £47.50) with Shearwater Cruises from Ullapool.

Or better still, make your way to Achiltibuie (a 45min drive from Ullapool) for a spot of paddling with kayaksummerisles.com.
