In 1901 a German competition called on entrants to design a “House for an Art Lover… a grand house, thoroughly modern, fresh and innovative…”

Premier Glasgow architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his artist wife, Margaret Macdonald duly entered a detailed dossier – though late - which led to its disqualification. So their designs really just gathered dust until 1996 when their Art Nouveau vision finally became reality.

The House for an Art Lover was then built and furnished in line with their smallest details, with results including the beautifully proportioned Oval Room, a Music Room that gathers around a piano and a Dining Room with its elegant long table.

Attention to detail is everywhere - in the panelling, art and fittings – as are Mackintosh's trademark tall and thin proportions and lines.
