Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA)
Once Glasgow’s showiest home, now its showiest museum
The extraordinary 1775 mansion of tobacco magnate William Cunningham now provides intriguing and attractive spaces – complete with stained glass and Corinthian columns – for stimulating contemporary art.
Nicknamed GoMA, the museum has a solid permanent collection of painting, sculpture and modern photography but is usually best for its temporary exhibitions. These always seem chock full surprises; often impressive, clever or funny, but rarely pretentious.
In the permanent collection, Scottish artists to look out for include Peter Howson, John Byrne, Toby Paterson, Ian Hamilton Finlay and Tim Stead.
There’s also an art library and a good basement café with free wifi.
