Old Course, St Andrews

Hallowed golfing turf

Home of Golf

St Andrews is famous for having the world’s oldest golf course: the Old Course (6609 Yards, Par 72), and locals have been teeing off here since the 15th century.

The Old Course is also notable for its myriad of pot bunkers and vast double greens that make directing your ball every bit as important as hitting it well. It’s also tricky because the flat-looking course really resembles a crumpled blanket with difficult, heavily creased greens. And, to top it all, conditions here are extremely changeable; there’s no single right strategy here and you’ll have to think on your feet…

To play the Old Course you’ll need to need to book months in advance or take your chance in a lottery for unreserved places the day before. If you don’t get a tee time, console yourself with one of the seven other very good courses in town (book here) and a look in at the World Golf Museum.
