Madrid

Madrid was designated capital by Philip II in 1561 by virtue of its position at the centre of Spain and it remains a crossroads for people from across the country. Its bustling streets are full of bars and restaurants serving up food and drink from every corner of the country. Beyond the vibrant lifestyle of the madrileños, the capital's other main attractions are its three world-class art museums: the Prado, the Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Reina Sofía.
Madrid is famed for its tapas and the variety of regional cusines on offer, but it also has its own specialities: callos (tripe) served up in a spicy sauce, cocido (soup followed by chickpeas and a selection of meats) and huevos estrellados (fried eggs broken over chips or crisps). The sierra around Madrid supplies the capital with plenty of quality beef and the region is gradually building a reputation for its long-neglected wines.
