Batalla del Vino
Wine battle in the heart of La Rioja

Combatants, dressed in white clothing and a red neckerchief, make their way up to the Riscos de Bilibiowhre they use anything at their disposal – buckets, plastic bottles, water pistols, spray guns – to try and drench their fellow revellers in red wine. When the battle is finished, the purple participants are treated to a picnic of snails and chops before making their way back to town.
The original romaria (pilgrimage to a local religious site) commemorating the city's patron Saint Felices may date back as far as the sixth century, but the modern festival with its mass wine fight originates in the post war period.
Celebrated at Riscos de Bilibio, 6km outside Haro, La Rioja on St Peter's Day, June 29th.
