Nan
Vibrant temple murals
Nan does not receive many foreign visitors, perhaps because it’s not really on the way to anywhere else and is a long bus ride from Chiang Mai. However, it’s a very relaxing place and a good spot to appreciate Thai hospitality.
National museum
A good way to begin an exploration of Nan is by wandering round the National Museum, which is set in a beautiful, colonial-style building near the town centre that was once the home of the local ruler. Displays include the dress of ethnic groups that live in the area such as the Hmong and Yao, though pride of place goes to a black elephant tusk held aloft by a carving of a mythical eagle.
Famous temples
Wat Phumin is renowned throughout Thailand for its vibrant murals that depict both the life of Buddha and scenes of local colour. It has an unusual cruciform shape, with four seated Buddha images gazing out in each direction. Several other temples in town are worth a visit, particularly Wat Phra That Chae Haeng, with its slender, golden, 55-metre tall stupa set on top of a hill across the river from the town centre.
Annual boat races
In October of each year, the Lanna Boat Races on the Nan River generate something approaching hysteria on behalf of the locals and the boats, up to 30 metres long and propelled by up to 50 rowers, make a fabulous sight.
Air There are daily flights to Nan from Don Muang Airport in Bangkok. Buses from Chiang Mai take 5-6 hrs.
