The Grand Palace
Bangkok's unmissable sight
The Grand Palace and the Emerald Buddha Temple (Wat Phra Kaew) together form Bangkok’s one unmissable sight. As such, the compound is usually heaving with tourists, but it’s easy enough to get distracted by the masterful art and architecture on display here.
Emerald Buddha Temple
The entrance leads you first into Wat Phra Kaew, where the Ramakien murals in the cloisters and the glittering spires all around just beg to be photographed.
Grand Palace
After taking a peek at the miniscule Emerald Buddha (just 60cm tall), step through the gateway that leads to the Grand Palace, former home of the Thai royal family.
Classic Thai design
The palace itself is an odd concoction of Thai and Western architecture, but the last building you see in the compound, the Dusit Maha Prasat, is the epitome of delicate Thai design, with golden finials pointing heavenward.
