Erawan Shrine
Famous spirit house
The Erawan Shrine sits in the heart of Bangkok’s commercial district, surrounded by shopping malls, hotels and the skytrain. It attracts a constant stream of supplicants and shows how Thais slip easily between the material and spiritual worlds.
It was built after a series of fatal accidents occurred during the construction of a hotel on the site, after which the accidents miraculously stopped.
Since then, the shrine has been imbued with the power to grant wishes, and Thais make offerings while praying for success in work or love. When their wishes are granted, they return to the shrine to offer thanks by paying traditional dancers to perform here.
