Ko Si Chang
Slow-life Thailand
Few foreign tourists visit Ko Si Chang, largely because it doesn’t have much in the way of beaches, but if you’re looking for somewhere unhurried that’s not far from the capital to touch the pulse of Thailand, it’s a great choice.
How to get around
The small, rocky island has just a few roads and a few hotels and guest houses tucked away in isolated spots. A good way to explore is to hire a local samlor, an elongated motorbike with a passenger seat behind that can negotiate the steep hills with ease and take you to see all the sights in a couple of hours.
What to see
The most famous sight is the Phra Chudadhut Palace, once a summer residence of King Rama V (King Chulalongkorn), though little remains of the original buildings. There are also some great panoramic views of the island from the hills above Saan Chao Paw Khao Yai, a Chinese temple in the northeast corner of the island.
Boat Regular ferries run between Si Racha on the mainland and the east coast of Ko Si Chang, taking about 40 minutes.
