Lampang

Horse-cart city

Just 100km southeast of Chiang Mai, Lampang is often overlooked by visitors as it has no famous historic monuments or other unmissable attractions.

Horse carts and gingerbread architecture

Yet the town has a quaint appeal, not least for its horse carts that plod around the town centre and give the town its nickname. There’s a bustling Walking Street along Talat Kao Road, which also has some fine examples of gingerbread architecture.

Horse-cart tours

Horse-cart tours take visitors to the town’s main temples, including Wat Phra Kaew Don Tao, Wat Sri Chum and Wat Sri Mong Muang, as well as Ban Sao Nak—a wooden house that functions as a museum. Wat Phra Kaew Don Tao was once home to the Emerald Buddha now in Bangkok, while the other two temples are in Burmese style, with multi-layered roofs.

Sights near town

Nearly 20km southwest of town, Wat Phra That Lampang Luang is generally recognised as one of the finest examples of Lanna (Northern) architecture in the region, and another popular destination, 30km west of town, is the Thai Elephant Conservation Centre, a government-run facility that features elephant shows, rides and an elephant hospital.
