Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai’s cheesy nickname: “Rose of the North” refers to its abundance of flowers that bloom in the cool season—the city’s latitude and elevation give it quite a different climate to the rest of the country from November to February.
One foot in the past, another in the future
Its old city walls and moat often entrance visitors, who feel they have been thrown back in time. Yet despite boasting an impressive number of ancient temples, the city also has a foot in the future, with mega-malls and cool cafes that attract digital nomads.
History and adventure
Culture buffs could spend weeks tracking down the city’s history as the capital of Lanna, a kingdom that once stretched far beyond Thailand’s present boundaries. Adventurous types can go trekking to hilltribe villages, white-water rafting or rock climbing, while those eager to learn new skills can study cookery courses, meditation or Thai massage. A visit to an elephant camp is usually high on most visitors’ list.
