Royal Oak
Traditional pub, traditional food, traditional ghosts (l,d; ££)
In a 14th century building on Goodramgate, a pub since the 17th century, this has the inevitable ghost stories. Children, a man, women with their own stories are all supposedly in different locations.
The Royal Oak is a pub favoured by both visitors and locals and valued for a generally warm welcome, and a wide selection of ales, including real ales, and meals.
The restaurant is separate from the main pub bar, and offers a fair selection of upmarket pub food. There are two menus, a main one, as well as a burger/steak card. Typical dishes include fish cakes, fish and chips, steak and various roast meat dishes, varying pies. Choose between usual veg, or some meals come with more unusual combinations.
Also a goodish selection of sandwiches (£6-£7) or hot paninis for a quick pub lunch.
NB: Fairly limited vegetarian food options.
Evening entertainment (music) often provided, particularly at weekends.
Note that the kitchen closes at 9pm!
TIP The Royal Oak is popular. Check their website for rexervations.
TIP The Royal Oak offers 1 hour guided tours of York followed by a meal (10% discount). Book at pub.
