The Hole in the Wall
Small, olde worlde pub (l,d; ££)
Close by the quiet York Arms and the livelier Three-legged Mare, this pub has a different atmosphere again, with its quaint, olde worlde, low beamed ceilings. It can get quite cramped, partly because there is no outdoor space for drinkers to decamp to.
(If it gets too full for you, try the Lion and the Lamb a couple of doors down for a similar atmosphere.)
The Hole in the Wall has entertainment on some nights. There is also a restaurant with a lengthy menu of solid pub fare, such as steak, fish, burgers, sandwiches, chicken, beef and Yorkshire pudding, as well as light meals. Some evenings there are themed offerings such as curry (Mondays) or grills (Tuesdays) at special prices.
TIP Walk down the short, narrow snickelway at the side of the pub (Little Peculiar Lane). Follow it down, coming out in Precentor's Court behind the pub, and you will have a surprise view of York Minster, granted only to snickelways aficionados.
