Rustique

Popular bistro French eating (l,d; ££)

This popular, smallish French restaurant is usually busy, so it's always advisable to phone ahead and book a table. A la Carte, with set menu also available (Sun-Thurs, Fri-Sat up to 7pm)

Its food is generally well-rated by both locals and visitors. Lake most French restaurants, its menu is based around meat and fish dishes, and in particular popular classics. (Vegetarians won't go hungry, but may be underwhelmed by the limited choice of dishes available and the food served.)

Some find the tables a bit too close together, and noise levels, particularly in the evening are not conducive to intimate dining, if that's what you're after. Wines (French, New World) don't seem particularly good value, and come in at around £15 to £35.

The restaurant has now opened a second venue in York in Lendal, near Museum Gardens (Tel. (+44) 1904 622333). Useful if the original one is full.

TIP Regulars rate both the value and selection of dishes vailable on the set menu, £15 (2 course) / £18 (3 course).
