Blink and you will miss the entry to this humble little 15th century church as you walk past the medieval shops in busy Goodramgate.

Through the little archway, the church shelters in a quiet garden and churchyard under the shadow of the grand Minster and a stone's throw from busy shoppers.

The church dates from the thirteenth century with further modifications up to around 1520. The present building has been largely untouched since the 1800s.

Though York has so many churches, this is the only one with wooden box pews. Walk down the wonky floors and take a closer look at the stained glass window, donated by its vicar in the 1470s, with faces straight from the medieval age.

A knowledgeable voluntary guide is usually on hand to answer questions. (Ask to see the hagioscope!)

Tip A touch-screen display (to the left of the altar) gives fascinating background information about the church.
