The present building is 600 years old, though there's been a church here for over a thousand years.

Outside, look carefully at the unusual spire and you'll see a lantern in it. This was used to light the way to York for travellers from the north through the surrounding forests with their dangerous wolves. A Church of England place of worship, during the week it's also a quiet, welcoming, and surprisingly intimate place of calm in a busy shopping area.

Inside, a huge stained glass window from the 14th century shows the life of Christ. The pulpit (17th century) was used by a visiting John Wesley, founder of Methodism.

This is the church of the ancient York craftsmen's guilds and of the city council. (34 Lord Mayors are buried here.)

TIP If you're around on a Friday evening, catch the choir practice that takes place from 7.30pm.
