Blue Barbakan Restaurant
Hearty east european food in a friendly atmosphere (b,l,d;££)
This family-run Polish restaurant serves not only the local Polish community, but a growing band of locals, many often getting to know Polish food for the first time. It began life as a deli, then a small restaurant down the road on Walmgate. Its growing popularity has led to the relocation. Its present home is nearer town, at the end of Fossgate on the bridge over the River Foss.
The extensive menu is heavily tilted towards substantial meaty dishes, as is the national cuisine, though the owners do make some effort to accommodate vegetarian options in the selection (eg pirogi pot cheese dumplings or stuffed pancake).
The restaurant has a breakfast/lunchtime café menu and an separate evening menu. During the day Barbakan also serves freshly-made, café-style snacks and food, including a range of hot and cold sandwiches or soup of the day with a roll.
TIP •Don't miss the homemade, freshly baked cakes and desserts.•
