York Arms
Small pub in the shadow of the minster
A central bar serves four wood-panelled rooms in this nineteenth-century pub in the shadow of the minster, including a small front snug. The Victorian atmosphere is added to in winter by a real open fire.
Perhaps not to everybody's taste (a tad gloomy inside for some), but this local is close to the minster, and the pub is notable for its cheap Sam Smith's beer from nearby brewery town Tadcaster.
As well as the beers and cider, typical, if old-fashioned, pub fare is on offer for the hungry. There are mixed views on the quality of the food, and the time needed for its preparation in busy periods.
The pub is also notable (perhaps surprisingly given its ambience) for having a long history as a local gay-friendly watering hole.
There are a number of alternatives on High Petergate. Across the way, York Brewery has now established Three-legged Mare and further down the road towards Bootham Bar, there are two other pubs, including The Hole in the Wall, which serves a wider variety of meals.
