Cape Sounion

About 43 miles from Central Athens, at the tip of the Athens Riviera lies the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion.

The main point of a visit to Cape Sounion is to see the Temple and take in the magnificent views, especially at sunset. There’s nothing in the way of places to eat and drink except the cafe perched by the ticket booth of the Temple entrance. It does make a lovely spot to sip a coffee and have a panoramic sea view.

Mythology

According to the ancient myth, the King of Athens–Aegeaus–threw himself from the Cape into the sea due to a misunderstanding.

His son, Theseus, had travelled to the Greek island of Crete to kill the half human half bull Minotaur as Athens was obliged to send seven girls and seven boys to Crete yearly to be eaten by the Minotaur. Minotaur
