Gazi & Technopolis
Gazi means ‘gas’ in Greek–therefore it’s no surprise that Gazi, and Technopolis, is the old gas works neighbourhood of Athens and has undergone an urban regeneration, making it the best place to head for nightlife in the capital.
History
The gas factory in Gazi was built in 1857 and started working in 1862, finishing its production in 1984.
Today, the disused Gas Factory of Technopolis, which stands in the heart of Gazi district, is a culture centre hosting several concerts and cultural events, not to mention the Industrial Gas Museum (better at night when it’s lit up and nice to wander around, admiring the architecture).
Neighbourhood
Gazi and Technopolis is referenced locally as being reminiscent of an old Athenian neighbourhood, with albeit crumbling neoclassical buildings giving way to some fantastic street art and murals. Take a tour with Alternative Athens to discover more.
You’ll find cozy cafes, bars and restaurants here, including the unique Dinner in the Sky experience (word of warning: don’t go if you’re afraid of heights!) plus GazArte; a unique venue with live shows such as comedy acts in the English language, rooftop garden with cocktail bar, cinema showing cult classics and bookstore.
