K’gari (Fraser Island)
World's largest sand island
A UNESCO World-Heritage site, K’gari (Fraser Island) is celebrated for its natural diversity: sand dunes, rainforest, wild heath, crystalline lakes, pristine beaches and abundant wildlife.
Cool off at Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie), walk among giant ferns at Central Station and take in the multi-coloured sand cliffs of the Pinnacles. Rising dramatically out of the beach just south of the Pinnacles is the Maheno Wreck, a trans-Tasman ocean liner blown ashore by a cyclone in 1935.
Hiking trails traverse the island. Among them is the magnificent K’gari (Fraser Island) Great Walk, a 90km trail following the ancient pathways of K’gari’s original inhabitants, the Butchulla people.
See des.qld.gov.au for updated information on hiking trails and both camping and 4WD permits.
How to get there
K’gari lies in southeast Queensland, some 250km north of Brisbane.
Car/Ferry: From Brisbane, head north on the Bruce Hwy (M1/A1) towards Inskip Point or River Point, from where car-and-passenger ferries make the short journey across to Fraser Island. You will need a 4WD and vehicle permit on Fraser Island itself.
Cash-only Manta Ray car-and-passenger barges connect Inskip Point (just north of Rainbow Beach) to the southern tip of Fraser Island.
From River Heads, Fraser Venture Barge and Kingfisher Bay Ferry sail to Fraser Island’s west coast.
