Kids & Families
With its high living standards, ample space and enviable beaches and weather, Australia is a perfect destination for families and kids. The offerings are as varied as they are endless: world-class theme parks on the Gold Coast, surf lessons in Byron Bay, crocodile cruises in Kakadu National Park, wild dolphin encounters in Monkey Mia, penguin parades on Phillip Island, gold-panning at Sovereign Hill, even ghost tours at convict sites Port Arthur and Fremantle Prison.
Most major cultural institutions have dedicated programs and information for young visitors; Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA), for instance, has a dedicated Children’s Art Centre. Major public art galleries are often free and discounted tickets for kids, students, seniors and/or families are available at many other attractions.
On the downside, Australia isn’t cheap. For instance, a family ticket (two adults and three children) at Queensland’s interactive wildlife park Australia Zoo will set you back $189. If you’re watching the budget, consider opting for self-contained accommodation and cooking your own meals. Markets and supermarkets are generally big on choice and quality produce.
