Fremantle Prison
UNESCO-listed convict site
Convict toil built this maximum-security prison in Perth, a World-Heritage site dating from 1850. Decommissioned in 1991, it still retains a sense of menace with its haunting gallows and solitary-confinement cells.
Daytime guided tours offer gripping insight into the prison and its inmates, some of whom pulled off audacious escapes. After-dark Torchlight Tours – run on Wednesday and Friday nights – are especially atmospheric and ideal for those who like goosebumps; book evening tours online in advance.
