Watarrka (Kings Canyon)
Dramatic cliffs, oases & Outback panoramas
Some people say Watarraka (Kings Canyon) trumps Uluru. What isn’t up for debate is its gob-smacking beauty: red, ribbed cliffs rising out of the Outback, punctuated by waterfalls, swimming holes, ferns and cycads.
Land of the Luritja people, the canyon is a wonderland for hikers and rock-climbers alike. The 6km Rim-Walk Circuit is popular, taking in panoramic views and a location made famous by the film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Hit the trail early in the morning to avoid the midday heat and, if possible, consider staying a few nights to hike the canyon more extensively.
Karrke Aboriginal Cultural Experience & Tours runs one-hour tours exploring local Indigenous culture, while Kings Creek Station operates expensive yet unforgettable half-hour canyon flights.
Watarrka (Kings Canyon) lies 330km west of Alice Springs.
Car: The easiest route from Alice Springs is via the sealed Stuart Hwy (A87); switch to the Lasseter Hwy (A4) in Ghan and then continue on the sealed Luritja Rd (SR3).
The shorter Mereenie Loop from Hermannsburg requires a 4WD and permit, the latter obtainable from the Alice Springs Visitor Information Centre.
