Purnululu National Park
Home of the otherworldly Bungle Bungles
Surreal geology, extreme remoteness and piercing sunsets mark this World Heritage-listed corner of the Kimberley in Western Australia’s far north. Accessible only by high-clearance 4WD, plane or helicopter – and only from April to November/December (weather permitting) – the park is home to the Bungle Bungles, striped sandstone domes evoking a mysterious, alien civilisation.
This is Gija and Jaru country and Aboriginal-run Bungle Bungle Guided Tours operates fantastic day and overnight guided tours of the area. These include an eight-hour heli-hike that takes in the dramatic Piccaninny Gorge.
Relatively easy but memorable walking trails include the 2km-return trail to Cathedral Gorge. Starting from the Piccaninny Creek car park, the trail leads through the Bungle Bungles’ iconic ‘beehives’ to a magnificent, massive natural amphitheatre.
