The Rocks
Modern Australia's cradle
Directly west of Circular Quay, The Rocks was the first part of Sydney settled by Europeans in 1788. It’s a compact, atmospheric (albeit touristy) neighbourhood, with bustling streets flanked by late-Georgian and Victorian architecture, pubs, restaurants, galleries, boutiques and the must-see Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA).
Start your explorations at the Rocks Discovery Museum, which sheds light on the area’s rich history, both indigenous and colonial. One-hour afternoon tours of mid-19th-century terrace Susannah Place lead you through interiors reflecting different eras in the neighbourhood’s past.
If you’re not in a rush, take time to wander the quiet, historic streets of the adjoining Milsons Point neighbourhood, accessible via Argyle Street and its convict-built Argyle Cut tunnel.
