Public Transport in Melbourne
Public Transport Victoria (PVT) oversees Melbourne’s integrated network of trains, trams and buses. See the website for a useful trip planner.
Trains radiate out of central Melbourne and into its suburbs. Most of the 15 metropolitan lines stop at all five city-centre stations: Flinders St, Southern Cross (departure station for regional and interstate services), Flagstaff, Melbourne Central and Parliament. Useful stops for visitors include South Yarra, Prahran, Windsor and Williamstown.
Trams are an indelible part of Melbourne’s identity and the city’s network is the world’s largest. Most routes criss-cross central Melbourne and trams are especially handy for reaching Carlton, Fitzroy, Collingwood, Brunswick, South Melbourne and St Kilda. A Free Tram Zone covers most of the city centre; stops are signposted.
