Wine & Wineries
Australian wine is acclaimed across the globe and exploring the country’s wine regions is a highlight of any trip. Several wineries are deeply historic, established in the early 19th century, graced with heritage buildings and planted with some of the world’s oldest continuously producing grapevines. These are mostly found in South Australia and Victoria.
Many of Australia’s wineries have cellar doors, open to the public daily or on weekends. Wine tastings are either free or offered for a small fee, usually redeemable if you make a purchase. Numerous wineries also claim award-winning restaurants, often showcasing local produce. Among these is Fino at Seppeltsfield.
Wine Regions
South Australia is the country’s largest wine-producing state, and both the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale wine regions are easy day trips from Adelaide. Both regions are celebrated for their bold shiraz. Further afield, the Clare Valley is known for its riesling while the Coonawarra region is noted for its cabernet sauvignon. Adelaide itself is home to the National Wine Centre of Australia, whose interactive exhibits explore the art and industry of winemaking.
