Yoho Valley

Yoho's backpacking heaven

Of all the three main side-valleys in Yoho National Park, the Yoho Valley is the one to head for if you want longer hikes, particularly involving backcountry camping.

The valley is also home to Takakkaw Falls, one of the park’s premier sights and an easy walk from the end of the road up the valley. This 14km road leaves Hwy-1 about 5km east of Field, and is a narrow, switchbacking summer-only (late-Jun–Sept) affair that’s unsuitable for trailers and RVs.

Several other hiking trails also leave from the Takakkaw Falls parking lot. They boil down to two basic choices:

<> Head 6km to Yoho Pass then on to Emerald Lake (12km) or Field (20km)

<> Head further up the Yoho Valley, along either the trail to Laughing Falls (4km) or the incredible Iceline Trail.
