Skyline Trail
Premier backpacking trail: 44km/3 days
Jasper National Park has 1,200 kilometres of trails and 100 backcountry campsites, so it’s a bit unfair to pick out only one multi-day backpacking hike. But to compare them all goes well beyond the scope of this app!
Certainly the Skyline Trail which runs south of, and roughly parallel to, the Maligne Lake Road from the Medicine Lake area, is considered one of the best. It winds through the Caribou mountains, is mostly above the treeline and hugely scenic.
Like all Jasper multi-day backpacking trails it’s popular, so you need to reserve a spot in a backcountry campsite – which is effectively your entry ticket to the trail – well in advance. Yet bookings can only be made a maximum of three months in advance.
Then within 48hrs of heading out onto the trail you should to drop into Jasper Visitor Centre to ensure that you get an update on trail conditions and any warnings.
Maligne Adventures offer shuttle services to hikers at both ends of the Skyline Trail.
Other popular backcountry hikes are outlined via on the dedicated park webpage and include: Jonas Pass (53km; 4 days) and the Tonquin Valley (42km; 3 days).
