Maligne Lake
The largest Rockies lake: beautiful & popular
The 48km road from Jasper to Maligne Lake is often slowed by wildlife sightings and heavy traffic heading to one of Jasper National Park‘s main sights.
For good reason, since the lake is stunning, particularly when its 22km length is still enough to mirror the surrounding bristly forests and snow-tipped craggy peaks.
The name (pronounced Ma-leen here) comes from the French for “wicked”, and was coined in 1846 by Jesuit missionary Father de Smet in honor of his difficult crossing of the Maligne River.
The road goes no further than the northern tip of the lake, where there’s a warden station, several large parking lots, a restaurant and a picnic area.
Hiking
Several hiking trails start here too, including the epic Skyline Trail and the short and easy Mary Schäffer Loop (1hr/3.2km/easy), a flat hiking trail along the lake’s east side with a good viewpoint.
