Truffle Pigs Bistro
Slick lodge & quirky mountain bistro (b,l,d; $$)
Field, BC – a 20-minute drive from Lake Louise; 40-minutes from Golden – might be an odd spot to find a hip gourmet Bistro, but that’s just what Truffle Pigs is.
Fresh local ingredients create treats for your tastebuds in a lovely spot, with funky decor (flying pigs!), great valley views.
There's a good range of snacks, home-baked breads and cakes, but the bistro’s probably most renowned for its dinner menu – which attracts long lines at the door on summer weekends. What’s bringing diners here is a creative seasonal menu that includes takes on dishes like Beef Bourguignon and Brome Lake Duck Confit as well as some off-beat creations such as Black Truffle Perogies.
Yet for all the menu’s fanciness, this is an unpretentious place, where muddy boots and kids are welcome.
One way to get to the head of the line at the Bistro is to stay at the restaurant-run Kicking Horse Lodge – since only guests can reserve tables.
Units have a contemporary boutique feel and sweeping views of the Kicking Horse Valley, but are otherwise pretty standard, though some have kitchens and sleep up to six. A room for two in high season costs $170, while in winter rates are slashed to start from $85. Wifi costs extra.
