Waterton (town)
Pretty National Park hub
Waterton, the only real base and service centre in Waterton Lakes NP, lies idyllically on a shelf of land that juts into Upper Waterton Lake (at 150m/500ft, the Rockies’ deepest lake).
It’s a lovely, laid-back little place with deer nibbling lawns and an easy-going holiday-making air about it. Vacationers stroll everywhere: around the small clutch of shops, cafés and restaurants in the tiny centre, to Cameron Falls, the town’s own tame little waterfall and along the lakefront.
Hiking options
The lakefront promenade also leads to a trio of classic Waterton Lakes trails:
-
At its southern end it becomes the easy Waterton Lakeshore Trail (one-way:3.5hrs/13km/125m ascent). This follows the lakeshore into the US: best take a boat there with Waterton Shoreline Cruises and walk back, or leads to the Bertha Lake trail.
-
At its northern end a Waterton Shoreline Cruise boats from the quay provide an aquatic shuttle to the Crypt Lake trail.
